![]() ![]() ![]() Blending oral storytelling traditions with the gritty, day-to-day, journalistic horror of life in the trenches, David Diop's At Night All Blood is Black is a dazzling tale of a man’s descent into madness. Peppered with bullets and black magic, this remarkable novel fills in a forgotten chapter in the history of World War I. Plans are hatched to get Alfa away from the front, and to separate him from his growing collection of hands, but how does one reason with a demon, and how far will Alfa go to make amends to his dead friend? At first his comrades look at Alfa’s deeds with admiration, but soon rumors begin to circulate that this super soldier isn’t a hero, but a sorcerer, a soul-eater. Anxious to avenge the death of his friend and find forgiveness for himself, he begins a macabre ritual: every night he sneaks across enemy lines to find and murder a blue-eyed German soldier, and every night he returns to base, unharmed, with the German’s severed hand. Unable to commit this mercy killing, madness creeps into Alfa’s mind as he comes to see this refusal as a cruel moment of cowardice. When his friend Mademba Diop, in the same regiment, is seriously injured in battle, Diop begs Alfa to kill him and spare him the pain of a long and agonizing death in No Man’s Land. Alfa Ndiaye is a Senegalese man who, never before having left his village, finds himself fighting as a so-called “Chocolat” soldier with the French army during World War I. ![]()

Tensions grew between the two, however, after the 2020 election as Pence dismissed the argument that he, as vice president, could reject what Trump considered to be "fraudulently chosen electors" and prevent Congress from certifying Trump's election defeat. The book says Trump wondered how Pence "could be such a 'stiff' and a 'square'' and "regarded Pence as someone not tough, as someone who, he increasingly pointed out, could be 'rolled.'" "He usually got ten minutes to do this before Trump snapped on the television and launched into his current list of grievances." Writers Julien Blondel and Jean-Luc Cano restore the anger to Elric, who’s not the sympathetic and conflicted hero figure of earlier graphic novel adaptations, but a vengeful ruler entirely sure of the Melinbonéan entitlement to dominate by might alone. Dire prophecies are given about the course Elric will follow, but he laughs them off as beyond the bounds of credibility. ![]() That’s a theme continued throughout Stormbringer as an enraged Elric calls on the gods for help in recovering his kidnapped love and for revenge on her abductor. It presented an arrogance and cruelty to Elric’s land of Melniboné, mentioned, but never really seen in previous adaptations, and reinforced the pulp action hero schematics surrounding Elric. As a new interpretation of Elric’s world, The Ruby Throne was a visual tour de force, leaving no doubts as to the validity of Elric’s adventures being adapted for comics again. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments The tao of pooh the te of piglet![]() Hoff explains that the meaning of Te (pronounced DEH) is “ virtue in action” and that it is a “quality of special character, spiritual strength, or hidden potential unique to the individual–something that comes from the Inner Nature of things. Poe based the complex rhythm and meter on Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship", and made use of internal rhyme as well as alliteration throughout. The poem was inspired in part by a talking raven in the novel Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of Eighty by Charles Dickens. Poe claimed to have written the poem logically and methodically, with the intention to create a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes, as he explained in his 1846 follow-up essay, " The Philosophy of Composition". The poem makes use of folk, mythological, religious, and classical references. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further antagonize the protagonist with its constant repetition of the word " Nevermore". The lover, often identified as a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. It tells of a distraught lover who is paid a mysterious visit by a talking raven. First published in January 1845, the poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. " The Raven" is a narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe.
